This is a USB drive that has been customized to look like some kind of cool brass tank with copper steam fittings. Its appearance begins to poetically express the idea that it might be a storage device for something important (which it is) rather than just a non-descript hunk of techno-flotsam. This starts to resemble a fitting repository for that epic space novel you've been working on, or for that portfolio of brilliant artwork (your best yet). At least, it looks the part more than this;
There are actually a lot of fun and interesting designs for USB drives. It's just a design category that has for some reason taken off on its own and sparked some creativity and imagination. There is some life, some whimsy and humor to it.
I'm going to try to keep my camera with me in hopes of finding more examples of interesting design that I can contrast with the much more common and soul-deadening injection molded plastic and other highly disposable and unimaginative concepts. Please feel free to send in your own examples, too.

I'm a big fan of form following function with a flare-- I think it comes from being in a crafty family; my grandfather made lovely knives out of thrown-away mill saws, and did this thing that made the blades look like they're made of rounded scales; my dad blacksmiths to make steak turners, and each one has some kind of a face at the non-pointy end. My mother works in leather-- I've a lovely and lovingly worked cell phone holster from her.
