M. B.

My own favorite Chestertonism along these lines -- "Among all the strange things that men have forgotten, the most universal and catastrophic lapse of memory is that by which they have forgotten that they are living on a star."

For those who may read it, I've got an essay in the upcoming Oct. edition of "Sky & Telescope" based around this quote.

Regarding size, your response to your daughter is right on Tim. Interestingly, placed on order of magnitude, man falls near the center of the structures of the universe. This makes us not too small to study the grand structure and not too large to study the fundamental particles and laws. Man is just the right size to investigate the world around him.
