The body of Padre Pio has been exhumed and is being prepared for veneration for a period of time, according to this Reuter's article.
Apparently, the culture has grown so unaccustomed to historically Catholic devotions that this was published as an "Oddly Enough" story, which I find odd. So there.
The article claims that "A Catholic magazine once found that far more Italian Catholics prayed to Padre Pio than to any other icon of the faith, including the Virgin Mary or Jesus.".
I'd like to see a little documentation to back that up, but I'm just crazy that way.
